Farm Manager
Green Umbrella has an available opportunity to manage daily operations at Camp Washington Perennial Farm. This role will include implementing regenerative agriculture practices with a focus on compost management and perennial food/animal systems. This position will oversee the development and maintenance of a half-acre perennial production field, hoop house operations, composting program, demonstration orchard, and integrated animal systems while supporting community engagement initiatives.
The position will:
- Manage all aspects of the farm's composting program including monitoring temperatures, conducting quality testing, coordinating sales, and implementing practices to sustain high-quality compost production
- Implement and maintain regenerative farming operations including no-till perennial agriculture, nursery, and orchard management
- Oversee the integration, safe care, and management of animals within the farm's systems
- Mow and maintain the entire site, including regular grounds upkeep and property management
- Co-create and document standard operating procedures (SOPs) for farm operations
- Perform basic maintenance and upkeep of farm equipment and machinery
- Support the Program Director during educational workshops and community events
- Oversee planting, maintenance, and harvest schedules for all growing areas
- Assist with The Common Orchard Project's regional orchard installation and maintenance activities
- Track farm production and manage distribution of produce
The successful candidate will have:
- Minimum two years of experience in sustainable farming, composting operations, or related agricultural work
- Demonstrated knowledge of compost management and quality control
- Experience with equipment operation and basic maintenance
- Valid driver's license
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously, with attention to detail
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors for extended periods of time in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, and rain.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Associates or Bachelor's degree in agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, or related field, or comparable experience
- Knowledge of fruit tree care and orchard management (training will be provided)
- Experience with animal husbandry and integrated animal systems
- Permaculture Design Certificate or related sustainable agriculture training
- Experience working with diverse community groups
Compensation is budgeted at $22/hour for an average of 30 hours per week for 2025. The position will likely transition to full-time (40 hours/week) in 2026. This is a non-exempt position and eligible for overtime if weekly hours exceed 40. The work schedule typically consists of 4-5 days per week, with flexibility to accommodate seasonal needs. During summer months, the workday will often start earlier to avoid afternoon heat, with some half days as temperatures rise. While schedule flexibility is accommodated, the employee must be available during core working hours 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Occasional evening and weekend work will be required for workshops and volunteer events.
