Position Summary
The Assistant Director of the Learning Commons provides leadership and operational support for academic support services within the Learning Commons, primarily overseeing peer tutoring, writing assistance, and academic coaching. This role also aids Student Accessibility Services by helping coordinate and implement student accommodations and plays a part in early intervention and retention efforts through Lion’s Alert.
Working closely with the Director, the Assistant Director supervises peer tutors and writing tutors, leads academic workshops, and collaborates with campus partners to ensure high-quality, student-centered academic support. This role plays a key part in advancing Learning Commons initiatives that promote student persistence, retention, and academic success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Learning Commons Operations & Leadership
- Provide day-to-day leadership for tutoring, writing support, and academic coaching services within the Learning Commons.
- Serve as a point of contact for students, faculty, and staff regarding Learning Commons academic support services.
- Assist with the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of Learning Commons programs and services.
- Collaborate with the Director on strategic initiatives, assessment efforts, and service enhancement.
- Support special projects and initiatives aligned with departmental and university priorities.
Peer Tutoring & Writing Support Oversight
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise peer tutors and writing tutors.
- Coordinate tutor onboarding, ongoing training, and professional development, with emphasis on effective writing support and academic skill development.
- Ensure tutoring services align with best practices in academic support and writing instruction.
- Maintain working knowledge of APA formatting and academic writing conventions to support tutor training and student needs.
Scheduling, Staffing & Program Coordination
- Create and manage tutoring schedules to ensure appropriate staffing and equitable access for students.
- Match students with appropriate peer or writing tutors based on academic needs and course content.
- Coordinate logistics for tutoring sessions, workshops, and targeted academic support initiatives.
Academic Coaching & Workshops
- Provide individual academic coaching to students, including support with time management, study strategies, goal setting, and academic planning.
- Lead and coordinate academic skills workshops, including writing-focused programming.
- Collaborate with campus partners to develop programming that supports student success and retention.
Student Accessibility Services Support
- Assist with the coordination and implementation of student accommodations in collaboration with Student Accessibility Services.
- Support academic, housing, and temporary illness accommodations in accordance with university policies, the ADA, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.
- Guide students through accommodation-related processes and connect them with appropriate campus resources.
- Provide ongoing support for students with additional accessibility needs and assist in adapting services as required.
Early Alert & Student Success Initiatives
- Support the university’s early alert system, Lion’s Alert, by reviewing referrals, conducting outreach, and coordinating follow-up.
- Communicate with students, faculty, and campus partners to connect students with academic support, coaching, and accessibility resources.
- Maintain appropriate documentation to support student success and retention efforts.
Recruitment, Orientation & Outreach
- Support recruitment events, orientation programs, and outreach initiatives related to academic support services.
- Represent the Learning Commons at campus events, presentations, and student-facing programs.
- Assist with developing materials and messaging that promote Learning Commons services to prospective and current students.
Collaboration & Campus Partnerships
- Work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and campus partners to identify student needs and enhance academic support services.
- Partner with Athletics, Admissions, Student Accessibility Services, and other offices to ensure coordinated student support.
- Contribute to campus-wide initiatives that support student persistence, retention, and academic success.
Qualifications
Required
- Master’s degree required in Education, English, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
- Experience in academic support services, tutoring, writing support, or academic coaching.
- Experience supervising student employees or peer educators.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Preferred
- Experience providing or supervising writing support or writing center services.
- Knowledge of academic coaching practices and student success strategies.
- Knowledge of APA formatting and academic writing conventions.
- Experience working with student accommodations or accessibility services in a higher education setting.
Work Environment & Additional Information
- This position is primarily office-based within the Learning Commons.
- Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support events, programming, recruitment, and orientation.
